AWS Launches Well-Architected Agent in Preview for Cloud Optimization

Amazon Web Services has announced the public preview of the AWS Well-Architected Agent, a new intelligence-driven service built to examine cloud setups and offer targeted, contextual advice. The system evaluates infrastructure performance, security, resilience, and cost without depending on generic checklists or manual audits.

The service functions similarly to an experienced cloud architect. It correlates resource configurations, application topology, and utilization metrics, reviewing them against best practices across more than 65 AWS services. By aligning with specific business goals, the tool provides implementation packages alongside its findings, detailing cross-pillar trade-offs to simplify fixes.

The platform relies on three core features. Goal-aligned intelligence replaces flat findings with prioritized recommendations based on impact and effort. Three-level recommendations range from individual resource findings with dollar impacts and step-by-step remediation to consolidated application findings and broad architectural patterns with Infrastructure as Code changes. Remediation optionality allows users to choose console walk-throughs, updated IaC changes, or AWS CLI commands.

Getting Started with the Preview

To begin using the service, administrators must create an agent profile within the AWS Well-Architected console. This step defines the monitored AWS accounts and regions, selected optimization pillars, and pillar goals. Users also provision customer-managed IAM roles to grant the agent read access to resource configurations, metrics, and topology. Initial recommendations appear within 24 hours of profile creation.

Teams can also review pre-deployment workloads by uploading a ZIP file containing an Infrastructure as Code project in Terraform, AWS CloudFormation, or AWS Cloud Development Kit. Developers who want to build integrations can configure API access or use the AWS MCP Server and plugins with their preferred AI coding tool to interact programmatically.

The public preview is currently available in US East (N. Virginia), US East (Ohio), and US West (Oregon), though workloads can be onboarded from any commercial AWS region. The offering is delivered by AWS Support for customers with an active AWS Support plan.

What it means for developers

Developers dealing with complex cloud environments can now automate aspects of architecture reviews and catch issues before code reaches production. The service delivers actionable insights paired with exact IaC updates, console steps, or CLI commands, reducing context-switching.

AWS notes that because generative AI powers these recommendations, outputs may occasionally contain errors or incomplete details. Users remain responsible for evaluating the guidance and applying appropriate oversight and safeguards.
