Canva Restructures Workforce Affecting Over 1,200 Jobs
Design platform Canva is cutting or relocating over 1,200 jobs, representing 22% of its global workforce, in a major organizational overhaul.

Canva has announced a major restructure that will impact more than 1,200 positions, accounting for 22% of its worldwide workforce. The changes include redundancies for staff members who contributed to building the Australian-founded design platform, marking a significant moment for the thirteen-year-old company.
Chief executive Melanie Perkins communicated the news to employees in a Wednesday email, describing the transition as the most difficult period in the platform's history. While some workers will face job losses, others will be requested to move to centralized hubs as part of the company's efforts to collapse management layers and increase in-person collaboration.
While Perkins did not break down the exact figure for actual job cuts, the total restructuring impacts 1,271 individuals. Affected employees departing the company will be provided with at least six months of salary, extended healthcare coverage for 12 months where applicable, and their work laptops. Additionally, departing staff can apply for US$10,000 grants to help fund new business ventures.
Industry-Wide Tech Restructuring
This move places Canva alongside a broader wave of restructures across the technology sector. Other major tech and software firms have also seen substantial reductions, including 1,600 redundancies at Atlassian, alongside workforce cuts at Block and WiseTech Global.
Across the software industry, firms have been adapting to increased competitiveness driven by artificial intelligence disrupters while simultaneously integrating AI capabilities into their own products. Although industry watchers have debated the potential of a "SaaS-pocalypse" where advanced AI renders specialized software obsolete, established software companies continue to adjust their operational models. Notably, Canva's restructure announcement did not explicitly reference artificial intelligence, setting it apart from some industry peers.
