Google Brings Experimental AI App Dreambeans to India

Google has brought its experimental application Dreambeans to India, marking the software's first international market outside the United States. Available on both Android and iOS platforms, the release incorporates support for thirteen local languages, including Hindi, Punjabi, Bengali, Telugu, and Tamil, alongside English.

Originally introduced in June, Dreambeans was subsequently made available to eligible U.S. users aged 18 and older. The application functions by pulling data from connected Google services such as Gmail, Calendar, Photos, Search, YouTube, and Gemini. It then proactively creates personalized, illustrated narratives concerning a user's daily life and interests, operating without requiring manual prompts. Recently, Google integrated its Veo video-generation model into the app to animate specific images within selected stories.

According to Google product manager Gozde Oznur, India was selected as the first overseas market due to high user engagement across Google services like Gemini, Photos, and Gmail, alongside strong local interest. Market intelligence firm Sensor Tower estimated that Dreambeans achieved nearly 55,000 downloads in the U.S. following its June debut, with about 63% of those occurring in September after restrictions were lifted. Downloads later declined by roughly 84% to about 5,500 in October. By comparison, Sensor Tower figures for the first 30 days of availability showed 7.4 million downloads for Meta's Muse, 2.8 million for ChatGPT, 362,000 for Grok Bot, and 155,000 for Claude. However, unlike those broad conversational models, Dreambeans is specifically designed for narrative generation rather than general queries.

Language and Privacy Considerations

While the application accommodates multiple widely spoken Indian languages, users must select a single language for their generated stories. Oznur noted that although the app can process information from Google accounts in various languages, it currently cannot blend them into a single story. This constraint may impact adoption in regions where users frequently switch between languages like Hindi and English, a common practice known as Hinglish.

Reliance on personal account data also introduces privacy considerations. Utilizing Google's Personal Intelligence technology, Dreambeans accesses sensitive information across connected tools. Data Management and Safety

To address privacy concerns, Google permits users to select which services link to Dreambeans and allows them to disconnect services or delete application data at any time. Oznur stated that data deleted from underlying Google accounts is similarly purged from the personalization system. Furthermore, users can instruct the app to avoid specific topics, such as business details.

The proactive nature of the software presents potential challenges regarding sensitive memories. Oznur admitted the app might occasionally surface difficult narratives, such as stories involving deceased individuals. Similar to existing controls in Google Photos, users can instruct the system to restrict certain subjects. Google is also investigating ways to transition Dreambeans from simple storytelling and recommendations into a more actionable assistant.
