Google Brings Personal Intelligence to Gemini in Cars
Google is updating Gemini in Android Auto and cars with Google built-in to include Personal Intelligence, linking the assistant to Gmail, Calendar, and more.

Google is introducing its Personal Intelligence feature to the Gemini AI assistant found in vehicles. Through this update, Gemini integration in Android Auto and cars featuring Google built-in will gain the ability to access user data across multiple Google applications, such as Gmail, Calendar, Maps, Photos, YouTube, and Search.
Smarter Driving Assistance
With these newly integrated capabilities, drivers can interact with Gemini using contextual queries. For instance, individuals driving toward the airport can inquire about their flight status. The AI assistant can retrieve necessary flight information directly from a confirmation email in Gmail and subsequently check the live status.
Additional use cases include requesting navigation by stating phrases like "take me to my doctor’s appointment" instead of looking up directions by hand. Users can also ask the system to "find the car wash from the photo I took last week and navigate there."
Google initially introduced the Gemini assistant to Android Auto last year and expanded availability to vehicles with Google built-in this April. Automotive manufacturers including Ford, General Motors, Honda, Nissan, Volvo, and Polestar currently ship newer models equipped with Google built-in, enabling native support for Android applications.
Privacy Controls and Availability
Google stated that app data will only connect to Gemini if the user explicitly turns on the Personal Intelligence setting. Tailored responses will additionally require a phone to be actively connected to the vehicle.
According to Google, standard vehicle functions remain unaffected for users who choose not to enable the setting. Drivers can still utilize navigation, play music, place phone calls, and ask general questions, though the replies will not feature personalized data.
Personal Intelligence is beginning its rollout to Android Auto, while support for vehicles with Google built-in is scheduled to arrive over the coming months.
What it means for developers
As AI assistants become deeply integrated into everyday environments like connected vehicles and mobile ecosystems, developers face growing demand to build context-aware, multi-source applications. Integrating disparate tools and personal data safely requires robust API pipelines and flexible model selection.
