Nexus Mods Mandates AI Disclosures for PC Gaming Add-ons

Nexus Mods is introducing mandatory AI usage disclosures for all new uploads, alongside stricter visibility controls and platform updates.

Nexus Mods Mandates AI Disclosures for PC Gaming Add-ons

Nexus Mods, the prominent repository for PC gaming modifications, has announced that creators must now disclose whether artificial intelligence has played a role in their projects. According to site owner Victor “Foledinho” Folmann, user feedback highlighted a lack of transparency regarding AI implementation across various downloads. While the platform previously offered optional labels, these are now becoming mandatory components of the upload process to improve clarity for the community.

Under the new guidelines, creators labeling their work as “AI-assisted” must also provide a public explanation detailing where and how the technology was utilized. Furthermore, these specific tags will receive much more prominent placement on individual mod pages. Despite these stricter disclosure requirements, Folmann confirmed that the platform has chosen not to implement a total prohibition on AI-generated content.

Why an Outright Ban Was Rejected

Explaining the decision against a complete ban, Folmann pointed out that artificial intelligence tools are already deeply integrated into modern software production workflows. From script autocompletion to the generation of custom textures, voice lines, and complete assets, drawing a definitive line between permitted and forbidden uses remains exceptionally difficult.

The platform's administration believes that prohibiting AI entirely would not stop its usage in development; instead, it would simply drive creators to hide the fact that they used these tools. By choosing transparency over prohibition, Nexus Mods aims to keep the process visible and regulate it through structured platform policies. Additionally, the site explicitly stated that it will not use uploaded content to train AI models, nor will it sell or license submissions to third parties for that purpose.

What it means for developers

For developers exploring artificial intelligence integration, platforms adopting clear disclosure rules emphasize the importance of transparency in software pipelines. Beyond AI-specific policies, Nexus Mods is updating its interface to address how rapid content production affects site navigation. Creators frequently uploading multiple files at once have pushed other projects down the visibility lists. To counter this, the site is experimenting with limits on how many items from a single author appear simultaneously, alongside stricter controls for new accounts. Users will also gain options to hide AI-generated content from game pages, the homepage, and eventually the search function. Existing creators have a 60-day grace period ending on January 2nd to update their past submissions before enforcement begins.
