OpenAI Revenue Revision Sparks Tech Sell-Off as IPO Valuations Face Scrutiny

A Financial Times report revealing lower-than-expected net revenue for OpenAI has triggered a tech stock decline, raising fresh questions about AI valuations.

OpenAI Revenue Revision Sparks Tech Sell-Off as IPO Valuations Face Scrutiny

A recent revenue revision from OpenAI has sent shockwaves through the technology sector, triggering a notable sell-off in AI-related stocks. According to a report by the Financial Times, the artificial intelligence pioneer recently disclosed to prospective investors that its annualized revenue is approaching $50 billion. This figure is roughly $20 billion lower than the $68 billion annualized revenue widely reported by media outlets just two months ago. The sudden downward shift in expectations has intensified questions among investors regarding whether the actual demand for AI technology can sustain the massive valuations of sector leaders like OpenAI and its chief rival, Anthropic.

Market Reaction and Financial Discrepancies

The market responded quickly to the Financial Times report. The Nasdaq index dropped by 1.25%, marking its poorest single-day performance since mid-August, while the S&P 500 fell by 0.5% as tech stocks dragged both indexes down.

The financial discrepancy stems from how the revenue was calculated. An anonymous source familiar with the investor presentation explained that the earlier $68 billion figure represented gross revenue, which included contributions from OpenAI's partners to allow a direct comparison with figures reported by Anthropic. In contrast, the newly disclosed $50 billion figure reflects OpenAI's net revenue.

Despite the lower net revenue figure, OpenAI highlighted strong underlying momentum, including a 77% increase in its annual revenue run rate during the third quarter and a 107% growth rate in its enterprise business.

Nonetheless, major tech companies closely tied to the AI ecosystem experienced sharp declines. Oracle Corp., which holds multi-billion dollar contracts with OpenAI, saw its stock slide 5.5%. Infrastructure and chip providers were also hit hard: CoreWeave Inc. fell 8%, Intel Corp. dropped 5.3%, Nvidia Corp. declined 2.9%, while both Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) and Broadcom Inc. slipped by 4%. Server manufacturer Super Micro Computer Inc. also fell nearly 5%.

Valuation Pressures and Shifting IPO Timelines

These financial updates arrive as both OpenAI and Anthropic prepare for highly anticipated public market debuts. OpenAI is working to justify its massive $852 billion valuation. Although the company confidentially filed its prospectus with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in June and initially planned a public debut for this year, it has pushed its timeline back. Last month, Chief Executive Sam Altman confirmed that OpenAI is now targeting a 2027 IPO, citing ongoing debates surrounding AI safety.

Meanwhile, Anthropic is reportedly aiming for a 2026 IPO, with some reports pointing to a debut as early as November 9, just before Thanksgiving. The company is seeking an ambitious $2 trillion valuation, supported by earlier Bloomberg reports of an annualized revenue run rate exceeding $65 billion.

However, financial analysts have raised serious doubts about Anthropic's target. Financial research firm New Constructs recently called Anthropic's proposed debut "the most ridiculous IPO of 2026," suggesting a valuation of only $150 billion. This skepticism is compounded by financial details from a leaked prospectus seen by Reuters, which revealed that Anthropic generated $4.6 billion in revenue in 2025 while incurring losses of more than $42 billion.

What it means for developers

For software developers and enterprise architects, these financial fluctuations highlight the volatility and high capital costs currently defining the frontier AI landscape. As top-tier model providers face intense pressure to justify multi-billion dollar valuations and manage heavy operational losses, the pricing and availability of proprietary APIs remain subject to market pressures.

To mitigate the risks of shifting API costs and vendor lock-in, developers can try top AI models cheaply through one API at https://apixoai.online. Utilizing unified access helps development teams remain agile, allowing them to easily swap models or compare performance without committing to a single infrastructure provider during a volatile financial period for the industry.

As OpenAI and Anthropic navigate their respective paths to the public markets, developers must design their AI integrations with flexibility in mind. Relying on architectures that can adapt to changing commercial realities will be key to building sustainable, AI-powered applications.
