Meta Acquires AI Coding Assistant Startup Conductor

Meta has acquired Conductor, an AI coding startup known for letting developers run multiple coding agents simultaneously. The software and cloud tools are shutting down.

Meta Acquires AI Coding Assistant Startup Conductor

Meta Platforms Inc. has completed the acquisition of artificial intelligence coding startup Conductor, according to reports by Axios and confirmation from the startup itself. Financial details regarding the transaction were not disclosed. Conductor is recognized for developing a desktop application that enables developers to operate multiple coding agents concurrently, with each agent functioning inside an isolated copy of the codebase for review and merging.

Supported coding agents on the platform include Anthropic PBC’s Claude Code, OpenAI Group PBC’s Codex, and Space Exploration Technologies Corp.’s Cursor, utilizing users' individual subscriptions and keys. In addition to its Mac desktop app, Conductor offers a hosted version named Conductor Cloud, which places agents in sandboxed virtual machines capable of working for hours while users monitor progress through an iPhone application.

Internal Adoption and Industry Context

Before the acquisition, engineering teams at Meta were already utilizing Conductor. When the startup secured its Series A funding round in March, it highlighted that dozens of engineers at Meta, Google LLC, and Spotify Technology SA were using the product. Overall, Conductor reports that its user base exceeds 100,000 individuals.

Sources familiar with the matter indicated that Meta intends to leverage the Conductor team's rapid product delivery to develop its next generation of AI coding tools. This purchase follows two Meta model releases in October that emphasized coding capabilities. On October 15, Meta introduced Muse Spark Open, an open-weights model designed for coding and long-running agent tasks, alongside its more capable closed Muse Wonder models used within its Muse Code terminal and API.

The acquisition coincides with broader industry consolidation. On the same day the deal emerged, OpenAI announced plans to acquire developer tools startup Pierre Computer, following an earlier June announcement to purchase sandbox-focused coding agent startup Ona.

Product Shutdown Timeline

Conductor's existing offerings are winding down in distinct phases. New user sign-ups and downloads halted immediately, and current Pro subscribers have been granted access to paid features at no cost. Conductor Cloud transitions to a read-only state on November 13 and will completely shut down on November 20, after which stored user data will be deleted. Users can export their data or transfer cloud workspaces to local machines prior to the shutdown, and active subscribers will receive refunds.

Local copies of the Mac desktop app will remain functional until early 2027, at which point the team plans to introduce a new, yet-to-be-described interface. At that milestone, updates and critical bug fixes will cease, and user data within the app will be erased. The company stated that it has never sold user data or used it to train models, and has no plans to do so.

What it means for developers

Founded in 2024 as Melty Inc. by Chief Executive Charlie Holtz and Chief Technology Officer Jackson de Campos, Conductor raised a $22 million Series A funding round in March led by Spark Capital and Matrix, with additional backing from Y Combinator and the founders of Notion and Linear.

For developers who relied on Conductor's workflow management tools, the upcoming wind-down means migrating codebases and workspaces locally or exporting data before the November cloud deadlines and the 2027 desktop app deprecation. As major technology companies like Meta and OpenAI continue to absorb developer tooling startups and integrate multi-agent capabilities directly into their ecosystems, the options for managing third-party coding agents across isolated repositories are shifting toward enterprise-controlled environments.
